Apologia: Chemistry and Physics

One of the students in our class is in Middle School and studies Chemistry and Physics.   The other kids are either studying Physical Science or Chemistry.  Many of the activities in her text book dovetail well with Physical Science.  Our class meets once each week for three hours.  The two groups overlap.  The one student, L., works with the Physical Science students.  Some of the activities are in the Physical Science textbook; for example, last week, L. created a density column.  Her textbook has a terrific idea for density straws!  We compared density straws using salt solutions with density straws using sugar solutions.  The videos are on You tube at ddsteven1.

I remembered to show all of the classes the density bottle, which is a discrepent event.Density bottle. Discrepent events make kids think.

This week, L.'s textbook had a chromatography experiment with chalk.  L. followed the directions in her book and then expanded the project to make things more inquiry-based using water color paper, cut into strips.  She tested pens, washable markers, and sharpies in both alcohol and water.  Look for the video at ddsteven1.
