This time of year, you need ideas which are cheap. Project Learning Tree (PLT) has some interesting ideas, STEM Activities Using Sticks. These sticks are tree twigs and branches. Very cheap. (PLT has Training sessions, which are usually free, but designed to produce trainers. PLT has fun activities for Co-op groups. Here are a table of contents and a sampler to see if you find the PLT activities interesting.) Tree Based Maths (Maths and Numeracy) has tree and pebble towers; it’s one link in STEM By Nature. These STEM ideas are also cheap. Let the kids collect their sticks and work outside.
What about craft sticks and STEM? Craft sticks are cheap. Craft Stick Gears go beyond catapults and chain reactions. Another cool idea is Popsicle Stick Harmonicas, which are similar to Bee Hummers. You can vary the sound with either the harmonica or bee hummer by using jumbo crack sticks, as shown here. Make a test a Popsicle Paddle Boat. Buy a giant box of craft sticks. Let your kiddos rifle through the junk drawer for rubber bands. Have a blast! Ease back into your homeschool routine.
