Dancing Lights is a complete lesson on Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Auroras 'Paintings in the Skies' by San Francisco's Exploratorium is a self-guided lesson. Illuminating Northern Lights is another resource for kids to learn more about Northern Lights which includes the Finnish myth and the origin of its name and references the Exploratorium's self study. There is an activity which uses a spectroscope. Home Science Tools sells Flame Test Kit with a spectroscope. Flame tests are standard fare for Chemistry classes. This lab might be a good way to connect the concepts of electromagnetic fields, spectroscopy, and flame tests. The link below has a lab and lesson that does just that!
