Apologia: Physical Science

Today, 10/01, the Physical Science class first reviewed the two labs completed last week with the two boys who missed the class.  The kids went over the labs (dry lab) with the materials used and then showed the boys the you-tube videos.  The kids are documenting many of their labs and lessons at ddsteven1 on you-tube as a form of assessment.  The class label and iced cookies for a sugar cookie Periodic Table.  It generated an animated discussion over the different groups and families.  The kids also did two labs: Experiment 2.1, Evaporation, and Experiment 2.3, CO2, which did not work as well, since the weather was overcast.  The kids compared the rate of evaporation of water with rubbing alcohol.  Experiment 2.1 is part of a lesson on relative humidity.  The group has gotten in the habit of recording their lab results on you-tube, ddsteven1.  Lastly, the class is working on a timeline of the development of the atomic theory: Antoine, LaVoisier, law of Conservation of Mass, John Dalton, Modern Atomic Theory, JJThomson, Plum Pudding Model, Ernst Rutherford, Protons, Henry Mosely, Atomic number, James Chadwick, Neutrons.  (Time line basics). The kids should look up the dates and create a time line on graph paper.  Time lines can be created on Excel.  Next week the class begins the Air unit foldable.
