WA: Life Science, Conclude Ecology

This week, Life Science has nearly concluded the Ecology unit.  The class repeated the Camouflage Lab and did an activity called Cats in Borneo  (Cats in Borneo Activity and the powerpoint Cats in Borneo Answers) which discusses 'unintended consequences'.  The class observed isopods (Isopod or Rolly Polly), and did two Capture Recapture labs (Capture Recapture) after a demonstration of the technique with dinosaurs.  This lab required a bit of Algebra; next week, the class will review the Capture-Recapture method and go over the math again. The students' Food Webs were due on Thursday and should have a title, 100 species, labeled trophic levels, and arrows indicating the relationships.  This is the portfolio submission for the first quarter.

 The students received Cell manuals last week and are going to begin a unit on Cell on Tuesday, Chapters 1-3.  This coming week the class will have a presentation on cells and organelles, color and label cells, and take a look at cells under the microscope.  October 16th, the students' cell models are due.  Last week, the class went over the guidelines and were shown representative models.  A guide is below.  For the students to earn full credit, the model may be either a plant or animal cell, be 3-D, have at least seven organelles, and a key or legend identifying these organelles.  The students will be learning about their functions in class.
