Human Biology: Wrap up and Nursing Assessment

Today concludes Human Biology.  I wanted a nurse to come because Anna is considering nursing or some form of medicine. She wants to continue with Physiology and Anatomy.  We’ll finish Human Biology and begin Anatomy and Physiology.  Today we had three labeling quizzes: Respiratory, Muscles, and Skeleton. 

After the quizzes, Wilkie's mom, Mrs. Cook, did a complete nursing assessment from head to toe.  We’ve had relatively few labs this past summer.  It was outstanding!  Mrs. Cook worked as a cardiac nurse for 14 years and currently works on a maternity ward.  She is up to date!  Mrs. Cook went over in detail a head to toe physical assessment using two of the boys as patients.  (We had to switch patients when Zach got too ticklish.)  She spent an 1 1/2 hours doing demonstrations: how to palpate, take vital signs, percuss a vein, etc.  Mrs. Cook prepared detailed notes and brought her flashlight, stethoscope, B.P. cuff, etc.  She brought a straw and cups to demonstrate 'crackling' in the lungs.  I took ten pages of notes.  It was such an excellent way to conclude class.  If you teach Human Anatomy or Human Biology, consider asking a nurse to demonstrate a complete nursing assessment.
