Tomorrow, we’re finishing the Koolaid activity and doing our first chemistry lab. Yes, we’ve done labs, but not chemistry labs yet. It’s one of my favorites: Flinn’s Reaction in a Bag. This lab requires large plastic bags, baking soda, phenol red, and calcium chloride. Before you buy calcium chloride on Amazon or eBay, check your garage for Driveway Heat. Be careful. There are several versions of driveway salt. Look on the back for ingredients. The pet safe driveway salt is magnesium chloride, not calcium chloride. (BTW, Epsom salts are magnesium sulfate.) Most driveway salt is NaCl or sodium chloride, rock salt.
We are doing this lab according to the instructions. I’ll post photos.
