I know from experience that kiddos love optical illusions. Assemble some fun into a gift! Save CDs or DVDs to make Spinning Tops (Frugal Fun has a good version, too). My local thrift store saves me used CDs and DVDs. Save bottle tops and scrounge for marbles and pennies. Other easy illusions are Flipsticks, Thaumatrope, Whirling Watcher, and Ghost Crystals (Clear, water gel crystals or beads both work.)
I made up my own optical illusion bin for Science Camp. There are several Magic Eye and Optical Illusion books, and Optical Illusion rubbing plates in the bin.
My favorite toys are the Disappearing Coin Bank and the Hologram Miroscope. Both are a big hit!
Make your own Disappearing Beaker. This demo requires a Pyrex beaker and Pyrex test tube.
Your bin can have a mix of demos and toys to make and to play. Copy some of the templates for your gift and add a Magic Eye book.
