We’re experiencing high winds with the possibility of tornadoes. I thought you might want some Friday Fun Day ideas early. You may be spending some quality time stuck in your basement trying to distract frightened (or bored) children. Optical Illusions are always fun. I keep a collection of Rubbing plates, Magic Bank, Card Deck, and Magic Eye books in a bin. These objects are well used! I’ve pulled out my bin for outreach events, summer camps, and Biology labs. Below is an assortment of ideas to explore how they work in action.
- The Bird in the Cage is the classic thaumotrope. Hummingbird, Thaumotrope, How to Make a Thaumotrope, and Flipsticks Cartoons are all links with thaumotrope templates.
- Decotropes are another version of thaumotropes.
- Another easy optical illusion is the CD Spinner. Here and here are the most common templates available. Try using multiple colors, two colors, and black and white with the different templates, for different results.
- Let’s try Zoetropes! Here are templates: Racing Horse, Simple Dsigns, with a frog, Predrawn faces, (Face example), and Dog and Dancers.
- Try Steve Spnagler’s Optical Illusion Heart or MEL’s DIY Optical Illusion or The Disappearing Beaker.
