It’s snowing again in our area. You may need indoor ideas. Playing outside on a snowy afternoon may have lost its allure. I’m betting you have a jar of coins on hand. Part of the fun can be digging coins from under the seat in the car or under the sofa cushions. I have ideas.
1. The Dancing Coin requires a frozen bottle. How convenient if it’s snowing in your area!
2. Try a penny or hex nut in a Spinning Balloon. We’ve also tried dimes and nickels; sometimes the edges of the coins cause the balloon to burst. Ask me how I know.
3. Try Let’s Do Chemistry with a Penny! This lab uses aluminum foil and vinegar. It is similar to Polishing Pennies!
4. Steve Spangler’s Drops on a Penny is another classic, which looks at the surface tension of water. This activity is really only fun if it’s a contest to see who can drop the most drops on to one penny.
5. Create your own scale and use coins for the Coin Weight Investigation.
6. Try the Inertia Challenge. This is also one of the activities in Newton’s First Law. We find quarters work well instead of using pennies. Here is an Inertia Lab using quarters. Large, steel washers work well, too.
7. Try the Bernoulli Coin Trick or Build a Coin Battery.
