Let’s make toys this summer! Toys are a staple at Science Camp. Our family makes science toys to combat boredom. Do you want to add to the fun? Film a video! You can always add the video to your digital portfolio. Planning the experiment to film for posterity takes more time, one commodity in abundance during the summer! See if your video goes viral.
1. Cartesian Diver: Classic pipette version, pen cap and clay version, ketchup packet version.
2. Balloon Toys: Balloon in a Bottle, Spinning Penny, CD Hovercraft, and Remote Control Roller.
3. Tornado or Vortex Tubes: Tornado in a Jar, Tornado in a Bottle (washer and duct tape), or Vortex Tube toy, which twists on to plastic soda bottles. BTW just about any size plastic bottle works.
The washer and duct tape version made a good vortex, but was leaky.
4. Balls: Basketball Blaster and Astro Blaster toy. Try different ball combinations: basketball and tennis ball or ping pong ball and tennis ball. The best combo is a tiny, bouncy ball and a pinky ball. Do it in the basement where you are more likely to be able to find the tiny bouncy ball. We just buy a bag of bouncy balls.
5. Spinners: Spinners (Exploratorium), Paper Spinners, Fidget Spinner, and CD Spinners. Yes, I’ve made hundreds of CD or DVD spinners. Ask the thrift store to save them for you.
