Let’s Make Science Equipment!

 Are you on an extreme budget?  Now is the time to make some of your own science equipment.  Take a look at the list below and get started!

1. Make an accurate scale.  (Use coins as weights.  A penny minted after 1982 weighs 2.5 g.)  Compare with this version or this scale.  

2. Here are Hygrometers for kids to measure humidity.

3.  Build a Hydrometer (or here) to measure relative density.  

4. Measure relative humidity with a sling psychrometer or with these instructions.

5.  Hypsometers, here, and here are similar to clinometers, (also here) used to measure the height of a tree, tower , or building.  

6. Cut a straw to make a science scoop for solids.  Use a clothespin as a test tube holder.  Use coffee stirrers or craft sticks instead of glass stirring rods.

7. Make your own test tube rack.  Here is another cardboard, test tube rack.  

8. Make funnels from paper, soda bottles, gallon milk carton, or aluminum foil. (Some chemicals react with aluminum foil.)

9. Make a thermometer. (As a matter of fact, all of GLOBE instructions are equally detailed.

10.  Build an Astrolabe. This one is simpler.  Here is another with a template.  They are similar to clinometers or hypsometers.  Nope, I do not know the difference.    

11. Make your own Weather Station.  Make a rain gauge.  

 12. Make a Cloud Viewer or use this site, which has a Sky Viewer, too.  Glue them from to back.
