My goal is to supply you with activities your kiddos can sort themselves. Many of the experiments will NOT relate to your school curriculum. These sorts of labs comprise informal STEM activities and are designed to engage kiddos. Why not let your family film the science report? The video can include a quick demo, a description, and an explanation. Save it for your portfolio!
1. In this Arbor Scientific post, #7 is Rubberband Ear. This is similar to Exploratorium’s Head Harp and Secret Bells. Kiddos can experiment with different widths of rubberbands or different types of string or yarn. Print pix of these activities and give them to your children to try.
2. Egg Toss requires a group of kiddos and a large number of eggs. First toss and catch raw eggs. Next toss the egg against a bedsheet. Finally, my husband, Rob, pulls out cookie sheets. One kid tosses the raw egg and the other one catches it with a cookie sheet. (Dip the sheet slightly before the egg lands on the cookie sheet and it won’t break. It has something to do with the moment of impulse. Rob has explained it to me; however, my brain keeps shutting down as he’s talking.)
3. Build your own sports equipment and then invent your own game. Give it a great name! Bonkers Bashers! (My favorite team name from a past Science Camp is ‘Bubble Monkeys’.) Yes, there will be some bickering between siblings.
4. These HST Rock Experiments are more school lessons rather than fun; however, they are easy enough for your kiddo to do independently. Let’s add this experiment collection to the list if you’re teaching General Science with the older edition next fall.
5. If it’s raining or too hot to play outside, take inspiration from NASA Space Place Art Challenge! NASA has Pastel Aurora and Handprint, too. Science Inspires Art has some great images! The hand of God is written all over the universe!
