More Instant Science Lessons

What are some more ideas for instant science lessons?  This is an important topic.  Our Co-op is Catholic; our families tend to be larger.  Emergencies crop up all the time. Put your Ecotank to work and print out articles and book-mark videos.  Create a Google Drive folder to house the related experiments for dreary, rainy days or Friday Fun Day.  I’m shopping for high-interest topics because kiddos are usually more willing to read these articles and watch related videos independently—key when you’re trying to mop up water from an over-flowing washer or busy spending a week potty-training.

NASA: 24 STEM Lessons are hands-on, such as this paper helicopter.  Put the template in the emergency plans folder. The student project has video instructions.  The teacher’s lesson has a Mars Helicopter videos and questions. Learning to Fly is a related article to print.  (Yes, my Ecotank does get a work-out.). STEM Aeronautics has more articles with activities; look over Four Forces. (Here is a two-minute video.). Teach STEM has a Pi Day Collection.

ACS: Articles for Kids is a collection for 4th—6th graders.  Print Bubbleology.  File away the Exploratorium’s Bubble Science Snack with the Watch and Do Video.  Another fun article is The Joy of Toys.  Toys from Trash has loads of videos.  (Search YouTube, too.)  Chemistry in the Toy Store and other links are a trove of science articles about toys for teens. Print a few articles from this ChemMatters issue, Oh! The Joy of Toys! for teens. Find The Hidden Objects is ideal for elementary-level kiddos.  I adore toys!  

IOP: Physics for Families has some excellent ideas, such as Superheroes Unlimited; there are mainly activities and interviews, great for a day when your toddler isn’t cutting herself bangs.  Print the word search.  IOP has story books: Mimi’s Tiny Adventure, Mimi’s Space Adventure, Mimi’s Rainbow Adventure, (Big Earth is coming this summer.)  These are British books.  Your kiddos might ask what trainers are.  Look at this Tiny Adventure teacher guide for video answers to Mimi’s questions.  Save the Thaumatrope for a day when dad is working remotely and can help.
