CSI or Forensics is a fun topic. It makes a great theme for summer camp, too! Invite a police officer in to Camp to test finger prints. Here is Crime Scene Basics to use as an introduction to CSI. Trendy Teacher has great tips to create a Mock Crime Scene. The Forensics Teacher has simple instructions to set up a crime scene. See if your teens will help set up experiments for younger kids. So much fun!
1. Read the articles and experiments in Solving Mysteries Through Chemistry. The NCW packet has a version of Fruit Juice Sleuth (Try both,), Appearing and Disappearing Ink (same version), dusting for fingerprints, and candy DNA.
2. Mystery Markers is paper chromatography, a staple of forensics. Follow up with Handwriting Analysis.
3. Another staple,is What is that white powder? Here is CSI Mystery Powders Lab. This lab is more involved. Want more details and background? Look over Using Chemical Change to Identify Unknowns.
4. Try a few forensics science experiments: HST Forensic Experiments, Science Spot’s Forensics Science Lessons, and Dr.Hall’s Forensic Science webpage.
5. There are tons of fingerprint labs. This experiment uses pencils and tape. Here is a fingerprint identification template and pattern identification sheet for Fingerprint Fun; this lab also has kids use ink pads to compare fingerprints.
