Is your family opposed to dissections completely? If you are, even virtual dissections are anathema. Why not do an animal study instead? I encourage you to do a complete study: extensive research, sketches, photo evidence, and detailed records. NPS has this guide, Animal Research, with suggestions, such as background research and questions. Here are a few ideas.
1. Pets and Small Animals Project has loads of ideas to design a study, from animal care to diseases common to pets. The page has loads of links.
2. Cornell has loads of bird projects, such as Celebrate Urban Birds or NestWatch. Purdue has simple instructions to monitor a bird feeder.
3. Native Bee Watch is another option as an animal product. Make a Bug Hotel.
4. Frog watch and the Monitoring Protcols constitute another robust animal study.
5. Another observational study is Bat Watching 101. Here are bat house plans.
6. The Great Lakes Aquarium has extensive Animal Behavior Studies, especially for fish. An ethogram is a study of animal behaviors. Here is an ethogram worksheet. Here is a bird ethogram, too. You may want to use ethograms with Virtual Zoo Tours (videos and zoo cams): Bronx Zoo, San Diego Zoo, Reid Park Zoo, Grace Gorilla Forest Corridor, and Wolf Cams.
7. What about a Virtual Animal Behavior Research Project? This project is college level. The links are live. This project was designed for college students.
