Family Summer Science: Kids’ Edible Chemistry

Kids love Edible Chemistry.  I buy a kit and refill the tiny containers.  There are other fun experiments can and make and eat. You may want to work with the kids to make alginate spheres. I’ve made them using a pipette instead of a syringe.  You can add juices to the alginate and drop it into the calcium chloride to make spheres.

1. Goo Worms uses sodium alginate and calcium chloride.  I’ve used calcium lactate and calcium acetate instead of calcium chloride.  They all work equally well.  Use some of the sodium alginate to make Yogurt Spheres.

2. Brew some Color Changing Butterfly Tea.   Use the tea to make a batch of Color Changing Lemonade.   Challenge the kids to create this Galaxy Lemonade.

3. Make Ice Cream in a Bag, Bread in a Bag, and Make your own Sherbert.

4. Try Sweet and Sour Science You Can Taste.

5. What about Agar Agar Spaghetti? You can also use agar agar to make Edible Pouches.
