Let’s pull out all the stops and start planning for a long summer break! Kids love to make and paint birdhouses and bird feeders. Below are a bunch of ideas for inexpensive versions kids can make. Do you have scrap wood? Consider building bird boxes. Kids love to build something useful. These look terrific painted and mounted in trees.
1. Buy a box of craft sticks and start building bird houses. Yes, colorful sticks are prettier. Instead let the kids paint their own birdhouses. Here and here are inspirational houses. Here are clear building instructions.
I2. Build craft sticks are much feeders, too: Stick Bird Feeder Craft and K-Cup and Stick Feeder. Most of the craft stick feeders follow the same basic design.
3. Make a milk carton bird house. They also all follow a similar basic design. Let your kids use plain paper to make creative art to cover their cartons .
4. Save milk jugs to make Milk Jug Feeders.
5. Make a Soda Bottle Bird Feeder. How about a Bottle Hummingbird Feeder? There is a recipe for the nectar, too.
6. NASA’s Make Your Own Bird Feeder uses a toilet paper rolls or a paper towel roll—my preference. Whenever I have a large group of kids, there is one kiddo with peanut allergies. Substitute Crisco or pancake syrup for peanut butter. Be sure to check that the bird seed you buy is nut free, too. Many kids with peanut allergies are also sensitive to tree nuts. 7. Make an Egg Carton Bird Feeder.
8. Look at this easy Cheerios Bird Feeder! All you need are cereal and pipe cleaners! Even the baby can make these!
9. Make an Orange Bird Feeder or an Apple Bird Feeder. Here are other fruit feeders.
10. Make your own Bird Food. The Farmer’s Almanac has Homemade Bird Food Recipes, too. I had no idea birds like cornbread!
