Make models more instructional.

 We use and make models frequently.  But, the purpose is a model is to increase instruction.  The kiddo should use the model to better understand its function.  For example, Pocket Solar System and Scaled Solar System create a classic model of the relative distances among the planets (and Pluto) in the solar system. (Scaled Solar System also models the relative sizes of the planets.  Use these together.). While you have the kids chart and label the planets, ask them why are you doing this activity.  Ask, ‘So, what?’  One reason is it helps kiddos start to see the enormous volume between objects in space and come away with a deeper appreciation of the majesty of God’s universe.  But, you already knew this!

Anatomy lends itself well to models.  Build a paper heart and working heart model.  Now write down each step how the blood enters the heart, flows through arteries, veins, valves, atria, and ventricles, before it exits, Step by Step Heart Flow.  Use the two heart models and repeat each step aloud as you use the model.  What do the bendy straws represent?  What about the bottles?  What seems obvious to you may not be obvious to your child.  

I just assigned the paper ear and paper eye model to build at home.  (The snow removal guy was ambushed by our neighbors who decided to vent their frustrations over the icy streets.  He quit, was persuaded to return, did a little more, and quit again.  Last night, a third company finally cleared our neighborhood.  There was a second company; he wanted $15K to clear out neighborhood.  It’s been a saga.). The kids write each step as sound or light enter the ear or eyeball.  Why?  I want them to understand the function of each part of the ear and eyeball.  Build it, see it, say it, and write it.  The entire process helps teens both process and remember details.   

We made Leaf Models to describe photosynthesis.  Here and here are more instructions.  Photosynthesis can be hard to visualize.  We used the leaf model in Biology repeatedly as we reviewed just how gases enter and are converted inside a leaf.  The kids had concrete models to help them process photosynthesis and where it happens in a plant.

In Chemistry, we rely on models all the time!  Different Chemical Molecules are models of atoms, elements, and compounds.  How do they bond?  What joins atoms to make compounds?  Why are the atoms  different colors?  What do they represent? Why are hydrogen and oxygen in pairs?   Why are some beads smaller?  Why is water sometimes shaped like Mickey Mouse ears?  Instruction in Chemistry is greatly enhanced by physical models. Start modeling with LEGOs. (Here is the LEGO atom key.  Here are extra reactions.)  If the MIT website is too confusing, try Model Chemical Elements using LEGOs.  I still remember how much scientists seemed to assume I would understand intuitively.
