700 Science Experiments for Everyone

 UNESCO has assembled science experiments designed for students with limited resources.  The team at Toys from Trash also promotes 700 Science Experiments for Everyone.  Scroll down to Chapter Two; there are images with instructions to make science equipment.  Kids live to make their own science kits. Let your kiddos make their own balance.  I just added Chapter Three from 700 Experiments to my Botany module.  There are instructions for sugar, carrot, and egg osmometers.  (Sugar increases the osmotic pressure and acts as a preservative.). I have never seen homemade osmometers.  They are over 40 experiments for plants, seeds, roots, etc.  Chapter Nine is all about water, including water purification and hydraulics.  There is enough material and experiments to serve as a syllabus for a General Science class, especially for reluctant readers.  You read over Chapter One and then begin with Chapter Two.  Let the child make different types of balances.  What is a balance?  How accurate are the homemade balances?  Use coins as weights for the balance.  You might want to talk about the history of weights and measures. Families who Unschool might  like this approach to General Science, especially if you have a child with learning differences.  Guess what?  Nearly every child learns science better by doing than by reading.
