Over the Christmas break, my Chemistry Co-op class is going to do a Mystery Powder Lab. (See this post.) Here’s the idea. The kids test known household chemicals: Epsom salts, table salt, sugar, calcium chloride, Cream of Tartar, cornstarch, flour, citric acid, etc. The kids test each chemical with iodine, alcohol, water, and pH paper. They need to write down their observations. Then the kids repeat the same tests on unknown chemicals. Basically, they are doing a qualitative analysis scheme.
