Apologia Biology: Module 1 Taxonomy

Module 1 includes Biological Classification or Taxonomy.  Dr. Wile uses a five kingdom model: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia.  I prefer a six kingdom model which divides Monera into Archaebacteria and Eubacteria.  Some systems use realms and domains; Dr. Wile discusses A Three Domain System, too.  Start by making up a mnemonic for Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.  Mine is Katie poured coke on father’s good suit.  Make up a better mnemonic and memorize the classification system.  The scientific name is its  genus and species names, hence binomial nomenclature.  Here are instructions for writing a scientific name.  When you write the name by hand, both genus and species are underlined.
