Mad Science: Dow Science Starts with a Question

Summer Science Camp may take place at home.  If fact, our family plans to start Mad Science Camp soon.  Right now, I am compiling resources.  Today’s sample is Dow Science Starts with a Question.  This is a thoughtful lesson with interesting applications, such as links to the chemicals and food, such as onion rings and veggie burgers.  Two of the labs require baking soda, sodium alginate, and calcium chloride.  Order phenol red to use the baking soda and calcium chloride to do Reaction in a Bag.  Here is some background on sodium alginate.  Finally, here are instructions for sodium alginate juice spheres.  Try using a dropper bottle, syringe, or pipette to drop the balls into calcium chloride solution.  Anything worth doing is worth over-doing.
