The instructions require split peas, salt, dish detergent, meat tenderizer, and either isopropyl or ethyl alcohol. With a big group, set out two brands of dish soap. (Dawn dish soap usually works best.). Set out two or three types of alcohol: 70% isopropyl or rubbing alcohol, 95 % isopropyl alcohol, and 70% ethyl alcohol. Compare room temperature or chilled alcohol. (Chilled ethanol is best.) The key to successful DNA extraction is fresh meat tenderizer. Blend a big quantity of split peas so your family can do several trials. Remember to change only one variable at a time.
