Will a bowling ball float? It depends. Here is the lab from Flinn with the math formulas. Here are directions from Steve Spangler. A bowling ball which weighs less than 12 lbs. will float. Be sure to use cold water in the basin, trash can, large bucket, or aquarium. I add ice. Why? The density of water is 1 g/mL. The colder the water, the closer to a density of 1 g/mL. A bowling ball which weighs less than 12 lbs has a density less than 1g/mL and floats. Bowling balls which weigh greater than 12 lbs sink; their density is greater than 1g/mL. What about a 12 lb bowling ball? It is about the same density as ice water. It bobbles up and down in the basin.
