Here is a home made measuring cylinder. Here are instructions using a 35 mm film canister to measure volume. The same site has a measuring beaker with instructions, too. Keep in mind 16.9 oz bottles of water are 500 mL. Use an unopened bottle to mark 500 mL on the side of the bottle. Use a ruler to mark half-way for 250 mL. You should be able to mark 50 mL increments on the bottle. Yes, it is tempting to order a graduated cylinder. If your kid makes their own cylinder, she will have a better understanding of volume.
