Family Science: Water

 Update: Here are more experiments about water from ACS.  They are from 1997.  Really!

Water is a good theme for science.  In Chemistry, a good question is, ‘ Why is water wet?’  ACS has a publication called The Wonders if Water.  It has experiments and a diagram with an aquifer.  (Here is an edible aquifer—a very successful experiment we did this past summer.). ACS also has Liquids Have Properties to compare mineral oil, water, and corn syrup.  Here is a student activity sheet to use for your science portfolio.  ACS has Chemical Education Reources on Water.  Try floating a paper clip or yen on a cup of water.  Try Floating Water over the sink.  Why is water wet?  Here is an explanation about water’s wetting properties.  Here is a thread from the Guardian explaining why water is wet.  It does come down to a water molecule’s polarity.
