Update: We actually did the DNA extraction twice this week. The first time the meat tenderizer was too old. I tried to get some at Walmart; they were out. I finally ordered fresh tenderizer and the extraction worked! Yeah! Meat tenderizer is from pineapple or papaya enzyme and degrades quickly. Buy a fresh jar. The white threads are DNA.
We finally did the DNA extraction this afternoon. We used these instructions. The key is fresh meat tenderizer. Dawn dish soap does work a bit better than other brands. I have not noticed any significant differences in results using cold alcohol or different percentages of rubbing alcohol, or ethanol. If you are not getting results, buy more meat tenderizer. Then try Dawn dish soap and chill the alcohol. Take a look.
