Family Science: Let’s watch birds!

We just put up a bird feeder last week. It’s positioned so we can look outside the window all winter.  I use cheap wild bird seed from Walmart.  We attract woodpeckers, finches, any number of  backyard birds.  Bird watching is fun!   Frugal Fun has Cookie Cutter bird feeders and Pine Cone Bird Feeders.  My Science Camp makes these simple bird feeders.  We cut up paper towel rolls instead of toilet paper rolls.  Ew.  If your child has a peanut or tree nut allergy, be sure the bird seed in free if these allergens.  Cornell has loads of resources: Bird Songs, Merlin Bird ID app, and eBird.  Have you heard of Identiflyer?  The device plays the bird’s call.  Some birds will answer the calls.  Here is an example of a bird life list, a record of the birds you identify.  Start with a feeder.  You’ll know if you have an avid birder in your family!  It might be time to buy a pair of binoculars for Christmas.
